The Year 2026 Hailed as the Era of the Croaking Craze.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my main revelation was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the showcased gamesโFrog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hopsโprominently include these leaping protagonists. Considering a gathering of frogs is known as an army, it feels they are launching an invasion.
From Classic Icons to Modern Mania
Croaking characters are far from new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a cult following. Yet, their prevalence has seemingly exploded in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are bona fide titles centered on frogs.
A Data-Driven Dive
To grasp this trend, I performed a detailed review into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The results tell a compelling story: a marked rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's rising status in the broader culture is partially evident elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the trend in gaming appears especially strong.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Frankly, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs offer inherent appealing traits for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a fan favorite in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues facilitate a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.
A number of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.
On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance
So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begunโand the potential for moreโthe evidence suggests for it to be the largest year yet.
When these games perform wellโand traditionally, games from this showcase often doโwe could very well be entering a genuine croaking cultural moment.
