British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of entry passages leading to the facility... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he added. "They were among numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This action, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the US military conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
