Exposing Venezuelan Victory Footage and AI-Generated Pictures of Maduro.
Synthetic images purporting to show Venezuela's president under arrest after his apprehension by the American authorities have garnered many millions of views on social media.
The Way AI Images of Maduro Appeared Within Hours
Initial fake AI image apparently showing him led off a plane circulated a brief time later. The picture was absent from any authoritative American sources; rather, it was published on X by an account purporting to be an โenthusiast of AI-generated artโ.
Verification involved an AI-watermark detector, which found the image was generated or edited with Google AI.
More synthetic visuals were disseminated in the following hours, appearing to show more angles of Maduro in custody. Noticeable logos on these images show they came from an Instagram profile named ultravfx.
AI analysis confirms these additional images were similarly generated or edited AI technology.
Authentic Image Released but Fakes Persisted
The former US president posted the initial authentic image of Nicolรกs Maduro handcuffed aboard the USS Iwo Jima on that morning. But even after this real photo was released, synthetic pictures kept circulating but were altered to include the gray sweatsuit seen on Maduro.
Digital forensics indicate these altered fabrications were originally uploaded on TikTok by a graphic design account. Once again, SynthID says these subsequent pictures were generated or edited Google AI.
Key Points:
- AI-generated content spread rapidly after the news of the president's apprehension.
- The first fake image appeared within hours on platform X.
- Tools like Googleโs SynthID were used to identify the images as inauthentic.
- Fabrications persisted to circulate and be updated even after the release of authentic photographs.
- The source of many fabricated images was linked to social media profiles dedicated to AI art.
